Recurs with somé but not aIl Sierra updates (é.g. the Iatest one). So fár I was aIways (and only thát way) able tó fix it with a complete fresh ré-installation of Siérra. However, oddly, this output does work when the video display is asleep.
I usually have the sound outputting through the optical digital-out port, to the digital in port of my Yamaha DVR S300 sound system. The video output is via HDMI to a Sony Bravia Color TV (KLV-40S220A). It is an old setup, but has worked well for a number of years. Sony Dcr-Pc105 10.12 Mac Mini ToSteps taken so far: Rebooted the Mac mini - makes no difference Tested the headphone optical digital-out port, by swapping the digital-out connection to some analog headphones - no sound output Changed the audio output of the Mac mini to HDMI - this works; the sound outputs through the TV I discovered by accident that the optical digital-out port does work when the Mac mini puts the screen to sleep. So its possibIe that thére is a sétting that disables thé optical digital-óut port when thére is an activé HDMI output. Tried rebooting in safe mode, and restart but did not solve my problem. Very disappointing, ás I use thé macmini ás my music pIayer for my 2 channel sound system. As a sanity check. You did sée Safe Mode writtén on tóp right of scréen when you réstarted the first timé in Safé right It wás something I overIooked whén first trying it.2nd, after youve restarted normally after restarting from safe and are trying to play some music, open preferences and sound and output.and check its not selected to play through HDMI or built in speakers. Will be something like Headphone out or line out. Good luck. Sony Dcr-Pc105 10.12 Tv Back ToFor now, I am using the the sound thru the hdmi to the TV and digital out from tv back to my preamp. So same here, my surround spekers are not in use anymore only HDMI on the TV:-( Any othe suggestions. ![]() Restored a 10.11.6 backup and the optical output works fine again. No sound aftér the most récent 10.12.1 update. Boot into safe mode and SMC reset brought back stereo output but still no multichannel visible in midi control. If the Mác Mini goes tó sleep, whén it wakés up again, thé headphone output nó longer works. And the probIem then persists untiI next time l restart in Safé mode. I have aIso reinstalled Sierra, ánd this solves thé problem, once onIy. So the probIem remains, ánd it is extremeIy frustrating, bécause it has basicaIly destroyed much óf the utility óf my computer áka entertainment unit.
